There is no large- scale Carolingian figure sculpture either. Only during the nth century, when the plastic sense returned to church architecture, it reappeared; only towards its end did it begin to produce work of an aesthetic standard equalling that of the buildings themselves, and only centuries later did it gain independence from architecture. 30
